Myanmar, known as the Golden land in the olden days for its fertile land and rich natural resources is the largest country in South-east Asia Peninsula sharing borders with Bangladesh, India, China, Laos and Thailand. With a total land area of 676,577 sq km, it is about the size of Texas and the size of United Kingdom and France combined. This land stretches over 2090 km from north to south and over 925 km east to west. It has a 2832 km long coastline on the Indian Ocean. Over 50 percent of the total land area is covered with forests.
Myanmar, a republic in South-East Asia, bounded on the north by Tibet Autonomous Region of China; on the east by China, Laos, and Thailand; on the south by the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal; and on the west by the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh, and India. It is officially known as the Union of Myanmar. The coastal region is known as Lower Myanmar, while the interior region is known as Upper Myanmar. The total area of the country is 676,552 square km (261,218 square miles).
A horseshoe-shaped mountain complex and the valley of the Ayarwaddy (Irrawaddy) River system are the dominant topographical features of Myanmar. The mountains of the northern margin rise to 5881 meters (19,296 ft) atop Hkakabo Razi, the highest peak in Southeast Asia. The two other mountain systems have northern to southern axes. The Arakan Yoma range, with peaks reaching more than 2740 meters (about 9000 ft), forms a barrier between Myanmar and the subcontinent of India. The Bilauktaung range, the southern extension of the Shan Plateau, lies along the boundary between southwestern Thailand and southeastern Lower Myanmar. The Shan Plateau, originating in China, has an average elevation of about 910 meters (about 3000 ft).
Generally narrow and elongated in the interior, the central lowlands attain a width of about 320km (about 200 miles) across the Ayarwaddy-Sittaung delta. The delta plains, extremely fertile and economically the most important section of the country, cover an area of about 46,620 sq. km (18,000 sq. ml.). Both the Arakan (in the northwest) and the Tenasserim (in the southwest) coasts of myanmar are rocky and fringed with islands. The country has a number of excellent natural harbours.
Early civilization in Myanmar dates back to the 1st century with archaeological evidences of the Phu Kingdoms of Thayekhittaya (Sriksetra), Beikthano (Vishnu) and Hanlin. The first Myanmar Empire was founded in early 11th century by King Anawrahta. The Second Myanmar Empire with its capital in Bago (Pegu) was founded in mid 16th century by King Bayintnaung. The third and the last Myanmar Empire were founded by King Alaungpaya in 1752. In the 19th century, during the peak period of colonialism Myanmar was annexed in three stages by the British after three Anglo Myanmar Wars in 1825, 1852, 1885. During the Second World War, Myanmar was occupied by the Japanese for nearly three years until the Allied Forces reoccupation in 1945. Myanmar became a sovereign independent state on January 4, 1948.
Myanmar is a union of 135 ethnic groups with their own languages and dialects. The major races are Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Chin, Mon, Bamar, Rakhine, and Shan. 45 million people speak 111 languages in Myanmar. Majority of Myanmar speak Myanmar language.
Myanmar alphabet consists of 33 consonants, and a few of them are semi-vowels (like ‘y’ in English). Myanmar vowels are not included in the Myanmar alphabet. They are stand-alone.
The currency in Myanmar is the Kyat. Present denominations are in notes: Kyats.: 1000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 1.
Now Government is freely allowed all the tourist to take USD 10,000 in cash when tourist visit to Myanmar. Government have been removed foreign Exchange Certificates (FEC) in 2013, and officially allow to use all foreign currency. Myanmar has much official exchanged counters in Major City and easy to exchange USD, SGD and EURO. Tourist can be used credit card (MASTER and VISA) allow any ATMs in major cities and tourist spots. But there have some limitation in withdraw of K300,000 which equal with USD per transaction and in using credit cards in ATM. For ATM cash withdrawals, there is a K 5000 per transaction fee, Tourist are allowed multiple transaction of 3 times a day.
The use of international bank and credit cards to pay for goods and services at outlets in Myanmar is currently limited but, Yangon and some of the more popular spots around the country, cards can be used at point of sale –transaction charge (4.35%) may be incurred.

Myanmar shares common borders with China, Lao PDR and Thailand on the northeast and east; and with Bangladesh and India on the west. At present, there are border checkpoints which allow tourists from China and Thailand to enter through these checkpoints with border passes and for third country tourists with valid passport and visa. If third country tourists want to pass through in or out Myanmar from border check point government allow Muse border check point from China, and Thachileik, Myawaddy and two others border check point in Thailand allowed with visa and special permission. Without special permission government not allow to pass in or out. Myanmar requires a visa for all foreigners visiting the country. It is valid for 28 days starting from the day you enter the country, three months from the date of issue. A valid passport with entry visa is required for all tourists and businessmen, applicable at any Myanmar Embassies and Consulate General Offices abroad. The international points of entry and exit Myanmar are Yangon International Airport and Mandalay International Airport. Show your passport (with valid entry visa) and disembarkation card on arrival to the Immigration officer at the International Airport (Yangon or Mandalay).
A valid passport with Entry visa is required for all tourists & businessmen, applicable at Myanmar Embassies and Consulate General Offices abroad.

Jewelleries, electrical goods and cameras must be declared at the airport. Antiques and archaeologically valuable items are not allowed to be taken out. Duty free allowance are 2 bottles of liquor, 2 cartons of cigarettes, 100 cigars, 1.5 lb of tobacco, one pint bottle of perfume or eau de cologne.
Most travelers will need vaccinations for hepatitis A, typhoid fever, and polio, as well as medications for malaria prophylaxis and travelers’ diarrhea. Other immunizations may be necessary depending upon the circumstances of the trip and the medical history of the traveler. Insect repellents are recommended, in conjunction with other measures to prevent mosquito bites. All travelers should visit their personal physician 4-8 weeks before your trip. The sun can be remarkably hot and a hat and high-factor block cream is advisable.
